Advent Secret by Katherine Fletcher

The Thursday Book Club Mysteries · Book Two

Advent Secret

A Christmas cozy mystery with Beverly Chase and her longtime book-club friends.

Coming December 1, 2026 · Preorder edition

Beverly Chase has Christmas baskets to pack and baking to finish. Then an adoption search brings questions about a newborn found at Kettle Creek Community Church twenty-six years ago. Helena Ostrowski knows something about that night. When she’s found dead below the church’s icy rear steps, Beverly isn’t convinced it was an accident.

With Dot, Margaret, and June beside her, Beverly follows the clues through Christmas preparations and conflicting accounts of Helena’s final days. They need to learn why her attempt to tell the truth ended in murder before the wrong person takes the blame.

Advent Secret can be read as a standalone. For the novels in order, begin with Lakeside Murder.

A note from Katherine

Beverly has plenty to do before Christmas, and so do her friends. Their investigation takes place among the basket deliveries, pageant rehearsals, and family plans that keep Kettle Creek busy in December.

Those ordinary commitments matter to the story. The women bring years of experience to the case, but they also bring the habit of helping one another. Sometimes that means asking a difficult question. Sometimes it means staying for tea when a friend doesn’t want to go home alone.

I hope you enjoy this Christmas visit with them.

Bring Advent Secret to your book club

For readers who have finished Advent Secret. These questions and your group's discussion may include plot details. They do not name the killer or explain the solution, but please finish the book before continuing.

You don’t need to agree about the suspects to have a good discussion. Try choosing one moment when you changed your mind and finding the passage that prompted it. Someone else may have read the same exchange very differently.

  1. Beverly’s way of helping. When does offering food or practical help make someone more willing to speak? Is there a moment when her kindness makes it harder for her to judge what she hears?
  2. Four friends at the table. Which friend notices something the others might miss? Where does a disagreement improve their thinking? Choose an exchange that shows friendship without anyone announcing it.
  3. The holiday workload. How do the Christmas deliveries, rehearsals, and family arrangements affect what people can see or remember? Which seasonal detail contributes to the investigation rather than simply decorating the scene?
  4. Memory and evidence. Find a point where a familiar account no longer fits the evidence. Why was that account easy to believe? What changed your view: a document, a physical detail, or someone’s explanation?
  5. Helena and Keith. How did your understanding of their relationship change? Which moment helped you understand one of them without requiring you to excuse everything they did?
  6. A family’s privacy. What does the community need to correct publicly, and what should remain private? How does the adoption inquiry complicate that distinction?
  7. The murder investigation. Which discovery helped you connect the old story to Helena’s death? Before the solution, could you separate an explanation for someone’s behavior from evidence that the person committed murder?
  8. Christmas Eve. What has the community regained by the final chapter, and what can’t be restored? Which small gesture stayed with you after you finished reading?

For a final round, each reader can choose one detail that felt important on a second look. Compare where you first noticed it and what you thought it meant then. Avoid voting for the “best detective”; the interesting part is how different readers arrive at different answers.
